The NEWGEN project, funded by the European Union’s Horizon Europe programme, is making significant strides in advancing high-voltage direct current (HVDC) cable technologies. At the recent M36 Consortium meeting in Bologna, all the consortium participants from the technical work packages (WP1-4) presented their results until M36. The the focus of Work Package 5 (WP5): Communication, Dissemination, and Exploitation presentation was the Exploitation Pathways Workshop, which brought together experts from the consortium to chart the course for maximizing the impact of NEWGEN’s Key Exploitable Results (KERs).

What is Exploitation in NEWGEN?

Exploitation in the context of NEWGEN means ensuring that the project’s innovations—ranging from new cable insulation compounds to advanced monitoring systems—reach the right audiences and create real-world impact. This involves:

  • Assessing the patent landscape and implementing an effective IPR strategy
  • Identifying and managing key exploitable results
  • Engaging with industry, research, and policy stakeholders
  • Leveraging European platforms and support services for innovation valorisation

The Workshop Structure

The submitted NEWGEN project proposal had twenty key exploitable results. Based on the midterm results, consortium members selected four results with the highest exploitation potential. The Exploitation Pathways Workshop divided participants into four groups, each focusing on a specific KER:

  1. Formulations for New HVDC Insulation Compounds and Additives for Space Charge Mitigation
Led by VTT, this group explored how novel materials can improve cable performance and reliability. Stakeholders include resin/polymer manufacturers, additive producers, and cable manufacturers. The group discussed opportunities for publishing results on the Horizon Results Platform and engaging with polymer industry leaders for further exploitation.
WP1 group
  1. Advanced Extrusion Technology and Process Optimization for Thermoplastic HVDC Cable Manufacturing
Led by Maillefer, this group targeted cable manufacturers and industry consultants. The focus was on commercializing new equipment and manufacturing know-how, with plans to showcase results at industry exhibitions and through direct customer engagement.
WP2 group
  1. Integrated Online Monitoring and Health Assessment System for HVDC Cable Systems
Led by Doble, this group addressed the needs of transmission system operators (TSOs) and research centres. The discussion centred on business plans, stakeholder engagement, and the challenges of market adoption for advanced monitoring solutions.
WP3 group
  1. Commercial Exploitation of the Life and Reliability Model of the HVDC Cable System
Led by University of Bologna, this group examined how reliability models can support TSOs and technical committees in qualifying and maintaining HVDC cable assets. Collaboration with research centres and industry feedback were identified as key pathways for exploitation.

European Support Platforms

The workshop highlighted several EU-supported tools and services to boost exploitation:

  • Horizon Results Platform: A matchmaking tool for disseminating KERs and connecting with stakeholders.
  • Horizon Results Booster: Free services to help projects develop business plans, increase market readiness, and network with potential partners.
  • Horizon IP Scan: Tailored IP support for SMEs, including analysis, interviews, and recommendations.
  • European IP Helpdesk: Training, resources, and helpline for managing intellectual property in research collaborations.

Next Steps and Stakeholder Engagement

Participants discussed how to leverage external advisory board members, industry networks, and EU platforms to maximize the impact of NEWGEN’s results. The workshop emphasized the importance of:

  • Publishing results on recognized platforms
  • Seeking feedback from industry and end-users
  • Exploring alternative application areas for NEWGEN innovations
  • Utilizing the external advisory board meeting for feedback
  • Disseminating the upcoming deliverables and project results to reach out to industrial actors in the HVDC cable system development.

Conclusion

The Exploitation Pathways Workshop was a testament to NEWGEN’s commitment to turning research into impact. By bringing together diverse expertise and utilizing European support mechanisms, the project is well-positioned to deliver tangible benefits to the energy sector and beyond.
