NEWGEN Project Final Results Webinar

Advancing Next-Generation High-Voltage Direct Current Insulation Materials, Cables and Systems for Reliable and Resilient Energy Grids

Welcome

The NEWGEN consortium warmly invites researchers, transmission system operators, cable manufacturers, technology developers, policymakers, and other stakeholders to join the NEWGEN Project Final Results Webinar on September 24th, 2026, from 13:00 to 16:30 CET.

Over the past 4 years, the NEWGEN project has developed and demonstrated innovative solutions to support the next generation of high-voltage direct current (HVDC) cable systems. Through interdisciplinary collaboration across materials science, manufacturing, diagnostics, and power system modelling, the project has contributed to advancing extruded HVDC cable technologies through:

  • Novel insulation materials with enhanced space charge mitigation performance
  • Reliable and cost-effective manufacturing solutions for thermoplastic HVDC cables
  • Innovative online monitoring and pre-fault detection methods
  • Advanced lifetime, reliability, and resilience assessment tools for HVDC cable systems

This webinar will present the key scientific and technological achievements of the project and discuss their potential impact on future HVDC cable systems and European energy infrastructure.

Webinar Programme Highlights

The webinar is organized around five key technical themes:

  • Session 1: Space charge mitigation in HVDC cable insulation

Discover the development of novel polypropylene-based insulation materials, innovative additives for space charge suppression, and dielectric characterization results.

  • Session 2: Reliable-by-design manufacturing of HVDC cables

Learn about advancements in HVDC cable extrusion technologies, manufacturing optimization, full-size cable prototypes, and sustainability assessments.

  • Session 3: Novel pre-fault monitoring solutions for HVDC cables and accessories

Explore innovative approaches for online condition monitoring, partial discharge detection under HVDC conditions, and magneto-optic leakage current sensing.

  • Session 4: Tools and models for reliable and resilient HVDC cable systems

Gain insights into lifetime and reliability modelling of cables and accessories, as well as system-level resilience analysis within future AC/DC grids.

  • Session 5: Project impact and exploitation of the results

Hear how the project’s outcomes will support future industrial deployment, research activities, and the European energy transition.

Detailed agenda will be shared closer to the event date.
